Synthetic enzyme inhibitor such as acarbose, miglitol, voglibose are useful as oral hypoglycemic drugs for the control of post prandial hyperglycemia especially in type II diabetes patients. These inhibitors delay carbohydrate digestion and it prolongs the time taken for the glucose absorption in intestine. A chronic usage of these inhibitors in conjunction with other antidiabetetic drugs leads to GI side effects like abdominal discomfort, flatulence and diarrhea.
