"SPACE is a club designed by musicians for musicians, which is why musicians love to play there. It's a warm listening room that makes you feel close to the artists-and Harvey Tillis pulls off that same trick with 10 Years In SPACE. "SPACE is a club designed by musicians for musicians, which is why musicians love to play there. It's a warm listening room that makes you feel close to the artists-and Harvey Tillis pulls off that same trick with 10 Years In SPACE. He was there night after night over the club's first decade as he photographed the performers drawn to this place's vibe, intimacy, quality of sound and respect for the music. Captured in his lens are intimate moments from legends who have played this stage-including Allen Toussaint, Richard Thompson, Irma Thomas, Lucinda Williams, Leon Russell, Johnny Winter, Bob Mould and Dr. John-as well as younger artists on the rise, such as Alabama Shakes, the Lumineers, Brandi Carlile and Lake Street Dive. All of them are here, sharing their passion while playing in SPACE." - Mark Caro, journalist, entertainment critic, and author. 10 Years In SPACE contains over 70 original black & white photographs includes Lake Street Dive, The Lumineers, Alabama Shakes, Pokey LaFarge, Allan Rayman, José James, Tyler Childers, The Lone Bellow, Tank and the Bangas, St. Paul and the Broken Bones relatively early in their national careers. Jazz greats both new and world famous include Cécile McLorin Salvant, John Scofield and Joe Lovano, the Circuit Rider Trio of Ron Miles, Brian Blade and Bill Frisell, Diane Schuur, Stanley Clarke, Christian McBride, and Terence Blanchard. Blues/R&B greats pictured include Billy Boy Arnold, Delbert McClinton, Donald Kinsey, Gary Clark Jr., Irma Thomas, Lurrie Bell, Magic Slim, and Shemekia Copeland. Many more artists are included. "10 Years In SPACE" is my salute, thank you, and congratulations to SPACE on its 10thanniversary." - Harvey Tillis, photographer. "My favorite clubs in the world are the ones where you never know what to expect, the ones that abide by one simple rule: If it's good, it goes on stage. Over the last decade, SPACE has become one of those favorites. Jazz, blues, rock, roots, world music and so much more, SPACE delivers, night after night, with something special - music beyond category, as Duke Ellington would have said. Since 2008, SPACE has been in the running as the best music venue in Chicago, even if it's just north of the Chicago border. You still haven't made it out to SPACE? Well, this terrific book will give you a glimpse into what you're missing. Photographer Harvey Tillis has lovingly documented a staggering array of performers doing their thing in SPACE's warm, intimate setting. Dive into this beautiful book. You'll be glad you did. Then make the trip to Evanston to hear the next act playing at SPACE. It's always a good night for music there." - Frank Alkyer, Publisher, DownBeat

Autorenporträt
My parents subscribed to LIFE, the original weekly oversized black & white picture magazine, when I was a kid. I was fascinated by it and studied every picture. So many photo essays caught my imagination. One in particular stood out and still does in my mind today. It was a series by Alfred Eisenstaedt, one of the original four LIFE photographers. He had captured images of world famous symphony conductors in concert or rehearsing with their orchestras. I was amazed that, as I looked at the images, I could almost hear the music. THAT'S what I wanted to be able to do. That's when I decided I wanted to be a photojournalist and create a project that captured musicians performing. I worked in other industries for many years. Nothing satisfied me as much or meant as much as taking - making - pictures. I have been a self-taught freelance photographer for over 40 years. I create original photo art - fine art images - sold from my studio, my web site harveytillisphotography.com, and through a few select online galleries. Commercially, I shoot environmental portraits, photograph events, and develop documentary projects for a variety of nonprofits, corporate clients, and government agencies. I see myself as a partner with clients, helping them to maximize the strategic power of pictures. My images are used for PR, communications, image building, income development, and marketing.
