From the translator's Foreword: "…all Russian translations of 'Alice' which I encountered are rather far from the original. Boris Zakhoder was the most honest since he directly called his version 'a paraphrase'. Other translators who did not make such a statement generally took undue freedoms with the Carroll's text. I will not claim that their translations are no good. On the contrary, Zakhoder's version, for example, is written in a more vivid style than the original-but there is one little problem: Lewis Carroll did not write it. So, my purpose was to make a translation as accurate as possible-certainly, as far as the language differences between English and Russian allow." Yury Nesterenko (b. 1972) lives in Florida, and writes poetry and science fiction.

Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (1832 - 1898), better known by his pen name Lewis Carroll, was an English author, poet, and mathematician best known for his children's stories Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and its sequel Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There (1871).
