Approximately 3000 Sikhs were killed in retaliatory attacks. The most affected regions were neighborhoods in Delhi. Many ordinary Indians of different religious dispositions made significant efforts to hide and help Sikh families. There are allegations that the massacre was organized. After the assassination of Indira Gandhi on 31 October 1984, by two of her Sikh bodyguards, riots erupted on 1 November 1984, and continued in some areas for days, killing some 3000 Sikhs. Sultanpuri, Mangolpuri, Trilokpuri, and other Trans-Yamuna areas of Delhi were the worst affected. The mobs carried iron rods, knives, clubs, and combustible material, including kerosene.
