20th Century Fictional Characterizations of Christ attempts to study the picturisation of Jesus Christ that has emerged in European and American literary and visual art forms in the last century. The focus of attention is on works that feature Christ as a major character. The portrayal of Christ that come under the ambit of this study, differs drastically and at times radically from the Gospel-proclaimed life history of Jesus Christ, which is at the core of institutionalized Christianity and which forms the fundamental religious belief of practicing Christians across the world. The author explores the differences in characteristics of the Christ found in literature/films and the Christ of the Bible, through a delineation of themes like the birth and early life of Christ, his sexuality and crucifixion.
