MULLOY's TESTIMONY: On 25 May 1970, Professor Christopher Dawson died. Age - 80. Religion - Roman Catholic. Nationality - English. Occupation - Professor and writer of history; a historian and a philosopher. Several months later, on Septembr 1970, in honor of the late Professor Dawson, a small book of thirty-two page was published. It carried an introduction by JOHN J. MULLOY (editor of Dawson's book Dynamics of World History, London 1957). The title of that small book or pamphlet of 32 pages is "TRADITION AND INHERITANCE -- Reflections on the Formative Years" by Christopher Dawson (St. Paul, Minnesota 1970) J.J. Mulloy attests that "these articles are the only autobiographical memoirs Christopher Dawson has written." And in the Introduction of this small book, Mulloy points out two salient points in the formative years of Dawson: First, "the boy's (Dawson) response to the different aspects of the Yorkshire countryside and the moods they expressed for him, resembling to some degree the INTIMATE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LANDSCAPE AND PSYCHOLOGICAL FEELING given in Undset's Kristin Lavransdatter; and Second, "the element of the LEGENDARY AND THE HEROIC IN LITERATURE which can become so important a part of the child's inner life." Although these memories of early youth ad childhood might seem at first irrelevant to a person's thought on history, J.J.Mulloy points out the significance these elements play, specially in the case of historians. >MORE INSIDE
