It is against this background that Moses Leroy Davis, the son of a black Mississippi sharecropper, was provoked into action to alleviate the conditions of his people by extirpating ignorance and substituting the obsolete status quo with actions superseding somnolence. Throughout this difficult and seemingly impossible task, his wealthy, aristocratic white friend, Johnathan "Little John" Smith, assists him in overcoming his adversaries.
