The purpose of this study was to inspect the students use of social media sites and their perceptions about the effects of the use, in the case of selected higher institutions of Mekelle city. The study started with the research questions concerned with how, and why students use social media sites, the effect of social media sites, how social media sites can be used as a tool for academic learning has been raised up. In order to answer the specified research questions, the researcher purposely selected students who uses social media sites and gave them subjective and opinion-based questions to answer. In order to carry out the stated objectives or questions of the research, both qualitative and quantitative data were collected from sample social media sites users of Mekelle University, Sheba University College, Microlink Information Technology College and New Millennium University College. The data collection was conducted using questionnaire, interview, and observation then analyzed the data through descriptive statistics, such as, percentage, cross tabulation, frequency, and chi square test of association. Accordingly, a Framework for student engagement in SMSs is proposed.
