After a strong interest in art through her school years, Ru then went on to have a successful career in music and teaching. In 2014 she began painting and sketching again, and it soon became her full-time obsession, with many works exhibited and sold. During lockdowns in Melbourne in 2020, Ruth posted a series of fun sketches on her local Facebook page to entertain the kids. The reaction was very positive with many readers encouraging her to put these into book form. Several books have resulted in A Friend for Christmas being the first to be published.
