Cathy Curtis's comprehensive biography provides a much-needed summation of the extraordinary achievements of Elaine de Kooning. Based on painstaking research and hundreds of interviews, A Generous Vision fills a significant void in biographies of American women artists of the twentieth century, bringing to life a leading figure who held her own in a contentious male arena and lived a full and fascinating life on her own terms.
