Notably, Finlay gives due consideration to social and economic factors as well as high politics. Volume 4 covers medieval Greece and the empire of Trebizond. Opening with an overview of populations in Greece following the decline of Rome, Finlay traces the aftermath of the 1204 sack of Constantinople by the Fourth Crusade, up until the 1461 fall of the empire of Trebizond in Anatolia.
