the book examines some aspects of nigerian foreign policy initiatives from 1985-1993. the period, 1960-1985 witnessed nigerian governments' efforts to nurture the country's diplomatic, social and economic contacts with the outside world. it was a period the nation's foreign policy vacillated a lot and not much of dynamic initiatives were taken, except for a brief period between 1976 and 1979. but a new dawn of nigerian foreign policy surfaced between 1985 and 1993, under the military government of general ibrahim badamosi babangida. quite a number of dynamic foreign policy initiatives were launched by the regime. developments in the nigerian polity were such that the nigerian economy was at best comatose. small and big businesses were folding up, leading to massive retrenchment of workers, galloping unemployment as well as increase in crime rate. also nigeria's image abroad, particularly under the immediate past regime, had been considerably compromised. the response of the adminstration to confront such economic, diplomatic and political problems at home and abroad, are the focus of this book.
