Barbara Alpern Engel, a leading historian of Russia's women, is Distinguished Professor Emerita at the University of Colorado. Among her recent books are Breaking the Ties that Bound: The Politics of Marital Strife in Late Imperial Russia; Russia in World History; and Marriage, Household and Home in Modern Russia.
