With the Vietnam War now over, the summer of 1974 is a time of uncomfortable change for the country. Brett Roberts is eighteen, uncertain about his future, and is determined to hitchhike across the country to see about a girl he met in Florida the previous summer. He doesn't know it yet, but he is about to encounter an unexpectedly eclectic mix of people. Some will challenge him intellectually, others will simply turn up the stereo and hand him a beer, and every one of them has a uniquely different perspective to share. -- Based on true events
