Dr. Henderson Carter, Senior Lecturer in History at the UWI Cave Hill Campus, artfully weaves an intimate, yet intricate tapestry of the maritime interconnections between Saba and Barbados. Central to this tapestry is the son of Capt. Frank Hassell, Eric Alphonzo, who left primary school at age 11 to pursue the life of a ship hand on his father's boat. Eric would later become captain of his own boat, "The Zipper", plying the Caribbean Sea. Eric's perseverance to make a man of himself, to raise and educate his family of eight children propelled him to later open a one-door shipping business in Bridgetown which has since become an unenviable shipping enterprise now managed by his grand-daughter, Erica Luke. In simple, yet fluid language, old and modern images of Saba and Barbados are juxtaposed with brilliant text charting the evolution of a business. Dr. Carter's treatment of the main subject, his extreme patience in digging deep to unearth the fibre of the Hassell clan is extraordinarily depicted, reflecting the love of family and the legacy passed to future generations. This is a portrait of the Captain named "Peace".
