His ties to Toledo extended beyond commerce, as he became deeply engaged in civic and cultural activities. In 1883, Maher married Anne Kelsey, and they welcomed a daughter named Amy Grace Maher. Amy later gained recognition as a suffragist and social welfare worker in Toledo, carrying on her family's tradition of community involvement and advocacy for social change. Maher's legacy is also preserved through his correspondence, which is archived at the library of the University of Toledo.
