Wood can be found at crime scenes in many forms: as a murder weapon, as material used to hide a body, or as trace evidence from forced entry in a number of cases like burglary, homicide, fraud or vandalism. Softwoods are most easily distinguished from hardwoods on the basis of bordered pits which occur on the radial side of the fibrous elements (called tracheids) that make up the gymnosperm xylem.
