These words of Mahatma Gandhi have actually sown the seeds of this research work. Humiliation of one human being by other, results in an individual with a very low self esteem. This state of mind further increases agony of the person and the person tends to lose his dignity due to lack of social acceptance. The main objective of the thesis is to sensitize the administration to human rights issues both globally and nationally; suggest mechanisms to monitor prison conditions effectively and ensure accountability in respect of violation of human rights of prisoners. Human beings are rational. By virtue of being humans, tl1ey possess certain basic and inalienable rights, commonly known as 'Human Rights'. They become operative with their birth. Human Rights, being the birth rights, are therefore inherent in all human beings irrespective of their caste, creed, religion, sex and nationality. Human Rights are sometimes referred to as fundamental rights, basic rights, inherent rights, natural rights and birth rights. 'Human Rights' is a generic term, which embraces civil rights, civil liberties and social, economic and cultural rights. The idea of Human Rights is bound up with the idea of human dignity. Thus all those rights which are essential for the maintenance of human dignity are called Human Rights. These rights arc essential for all individuals as they are consonant with their freedom and dignity and are conducive to their physical, moral, social and spiritual welfare. Human Rights are generally defined as those rights which every human being is entitled to enjoy by virtue of being a member of human species.
