Otto von Kotzebue, geboren 1787 als Sohn deutscher Eltern in Reval/Estland. Sein Vater war August Friedrich von Kotzebue - bekannter deutscher Theaterdichter - ermordet 1819 vom Jenaer Burschenschafter K. L. Sand. Otto begleitete bereits mit fünfzehn Jahren Kapitän von Krusenstern auf der ersten russischen Weltumsegelung. Neun Jahre später Leitung einer Expedition um die Welt unter Teilnahme des Dichters Adalbert von Chamisso und des Malers Louis Schoris. Durchquerung der Bering-Straße mit seinem Schiff "Rurik" und Entdeckung den nach ihm benannten Kotzebue-Sund. 1823 - 1826 ein weiteres Mal eine Erdeumrundung. Der Autor verstarb 20 Jahre später in seiner Heimatstadt Reval.
