A Novel Approach to the American Dream tells how thirteen former presidents work together to avert an existential threat to the nation they once led. That threat is an end to our experiment in self-government and the beginning of the American nightmare.Meeting in the Blue Room of the White House, one floor below the Oval Office, they review the origins the American dream, reflect on their colleagues' use of the phase and try to devise a more futuristic, more vigorous version of the dream. Bound by a pledge to tell the truth and only act with unanimity, they must put aside their personal animosities, hyper-partisanship and deep policy differences. And yet, even as they reach unanimity, they face the wrath of the man upstairs: Donald J. Trump. Intent on being part of a global kleptocracy, this raging narcissist envies the kings and tzars of centuries past. And everyday Americans are meant to be the subjects, servants and serfs of his American nightmare.Impossible? Probably. Surreal? Certainly. But then what steps would YOU take to preserve our representative democracy? To prevent an American nightmare? Maybe, just maybe, this novel is your first step towards preserving the American dream for generations to come.

Autorenporträt
Rick Sloan is the author of The Gift of Strategy (1995) and Revenge of America's Unemployed (2017). They recount his efforts to combat the conventional wisdom in Washington, shift the strategies and tactics of Democrats presidential campaigns and refocus his party on its working class roots. With A Novel Approach to the American Dream, Sloan continues his political iconoclasm, provocative strategies and advocacy for everyday Americans. His rare genius for drawing large insights from the smallest details of America's electoral past -- and now its rhetorical past -- is on full display. Sloan's career spans five decades and a dozen presidential campaigns, stints on Capitol Hill as Chief of Staff to Ohio Senator Howard Metzenbaum from Michigan Congressman John Dingell, his own campaign against then Congressman John Kasich (OH-12), and more than 30 years working for (and with) progressive labor unions.Rick Sloan was born in Erie, Pennsylvania. He received his B.A. and J.D degrees from The Ohio State University. He now splits his time between Washington, D.C. and Brooklin, Maine. His wife, Katrinka Smith Sloan, leads an association of nonprofits dedicated to aging services. Their three adult children are pursing careers in public policy and public health.
