Expansive clay absorb water and swell, and lose water to atmosphere and shrink. Because of this alternate swelling and shrinkage, lightly loaded civil engineering structures are distressed. This has resulted in a huge financial loss. Hence, it is and important to devise innovative foundation techniques in order to counteract the volumetric changes occurring in expansive soils. The various foundation techniques which have been in vogue are physical and chemical alteration methods and tension resistant foundations. Tension-resistant foundation techniques are innovative techniques in which tensile forces generated through the process of swelling are counteracted through introduction of deep or anchor foundations. This book is a work on a parametric study of tension-resistant foundations.
