James Augustine Aloysius Joyce (em Irlandês: Séamus Seoighe) nasceu a 2 de fevereiro de 1882 em Dublin (Irlanda), e veio a falecer em Zurique (Suíça) a 13 de janeiro de 1941 aos 58 anos. Tendo entrado em coma após uma cirurgia a uma úlcera péptica duodenal perfurada, viria a falecer dois dias depois enquanto aguardava a visita da sua esposa Nora Barnacle e do seu filho Giorgio Joyce que se encontravam a caminho. O seu corpo foi sepultado no Cemitério Fluntern em Zurique (Suíça).Escritor de excelência da vanguarda modernista, James Joyce distinguiu-se na literatura como poeta, contista, novelista e romancista, sendo considerado um dos mais importantes autores do século XX e como tal um dos maiores influenciadores da literatura do mesmo século.James Joyce tinha problemas de visão que levaram a múltiplas cirurgias oftalmológicas ao longo da sua vida, motivo pelo qual podemos vê-lo usar pala em diversas ocasiões em que foi fotografado. O seu percurso de vida inclui a frequência universitária (1898) em Dublin na University College, onde estudou Inglês, Francês e Italiano, e época na qual frequentou diversos círculos literários e teatrais. Dois anos após ter inciado a universidade Joyce publicou o seu primeiro trabalho na The Fortnightly Review (1900), uma recensão da última obra dramática de Henrik Ibsen Når vi døde vågner (Quando Nós Os Mortos Acordamos). A crítica literária viria a ser também uma das suas paixões. Em 1902 e após se ter licenciado na Royal University of Dublin, Joyce tentou seguir medicina na Catholic University Medical School, mas não tendo conseguido uma posição de docente para financiar os seus estudos, deslocou-se para Paris a fim de prosseguir estudos na École de Médecine, mas viria a desistir, no entanto permancendo em Paris.A sua vida tomou um rumo quando conheceu Nora Barnacle em 1904, mulher que viria a ser sua esposa. Joyce tentou então a música, sendo m tenor talentoso inscreveu-se num concurso de música irlandesa, a fim de melhor as suas capacidades, penhorou alguns dos seus livros para ter aulas de canto. O concurso correu-lhe bem nas duas primeiras atuações, mas na terceira teria de cantar a prima vista, desafio musical em que o cantor não ensaia e interpreta a música que lhe colocarem no momento de atuação, ele recusou. Ainda assim ficou em terceiro lugar. De seguida conseguiu dar os primeiros passos da sua reputação literária ao tentar publicar A Portrait of the Artist, mas foi recusado pelo jornal Dana. Em meados desse ano conseguiu por fim publicar três contos que viriam a integrar The Dubliners no Irish Homestead. No fim de 1904 Joyce impôs-se um auto-exílio e partiu para Zurique na expetativa de se tornar docente numa vaga que lhe havia sido prometida, mas ao chegar lá não existia vaga alguma. O diretor da escola de Trieste enviou-o então para Pola onde viria a en-sinar inglês numa base naval austro-húngara. Já em 1905 Joyce conseguiu colocação na Escola Berlitz em Trieste onde por fim lhe foi possível juntar dinheiro para publicar o seu poema satírico Holy Offce do qual conseguiu fazer imprimir cópias e distribuí-las.Mais tarde, cansado de Trieste e de não conseguir publicar The Dubliners, aventurou-se para Roma para trabalhar num banco que lhe pagava o dobro do salário. Joyce aproveitou para trabalhar e rever as suas obras, mas a estadia não durou muito e voltou para Trieste.Em 1914, por fim, conseguiu a publicação de The Dubliners por via da Maunsel and Company de George Roberts, após oito anos de espera.Posteriomente - e deixando mais biografia para futuras publicações - a sua carreira literária compôs-se tendo publicado a sua magnus opera Ulysses, livros de poesia e peças de teatro, entre outras obras.Nos anos seguintes James Joyce não voltou a Dublin, e fez o resto da sua vida entre Londres, Paris, Trieste e Zurique, onde viria por fim a falecer a 13 de janeiro de 1941.
