Sylvia Stachura's career has included working at local hospitals as an administrative medical secretary and data coordinator.She worked at the nationally renowned Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, NY. (RPCI). It was an amazing learning experience. It also provided a rude awakening as to the profound suffering the patients were experiencing, the magnitude of which she had never witnessed before.While at RPCI, she was given extensive instruction in the cancer disease process, as well as the treatments that were available at the time. She continued to work there after being married and until their children were born. For a short time, she worked at Sisters of Charity Hospital, editing and transcribing surgical reports.She later returned to RPCI as a data coordinator for a nutritional study on laryngectomy patients, who had cancer of the larynx and had their voice box removed. They were taught laryngeal speech or were given an electrolarynx and spoke through a microphone. Most of them did extremely well and their spirits were always good.She also worked at the Buffalo General Hospital as an Administrative/Medical Secretary for three cardiologists in the Cardiac Angiology Department.Her schooling included Erie Community College focusing on medical technology courses. Attending local writing workshops and conferences intrigued her to write.Sylvia lives in Williamsville, New York with her husband Ed, who is a retired civil/transportation engineer. They have two grown children, six grandchildren, and two great grandsons.
