Facebook was involved in many political activities in Iran in recent years; one Facebook group stated that there were approx. 150,000 Facebook users in Iran (Facebook group) in 2009. According to the Social Networking Websites Popularity Map (maps of world), Facebook was the most popular social networking website in Iran before it was banned. It was beginning used in the eParticipation context by users to discuss politics and political candidates to develop their networks; it enabled Iranian citizens more than ever before, to connect with one other, to discuss and organize political activities across traditional geography and political boundaries to express their political opinion and influence on government decision.
