Ibanag belongs to the Cordilleran subgroup of the Malayo-Polynesian branch of the Austronesian language family. Shirley is a full-time professor of the Department of English and Applied Linguistics of De La Salle University, the Philippines. She holds a Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics from the same university where she graduated With Distinction. Shirley is currently involved in the documentation and corpus building of Philippine Languages.
