The incidence of diabetes has been on the increase in Nigeria, as in the world. Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a well-recognized complication of diabetes mellitus (DM). Lack of comprehensive DR screening programmes, poor early detection and treatment in Nigeria has made the vision 2020 recommendation on DR very imperative. This study consists of a descriptive and analytical cross-sectional study with qualitative component. EFCPB is the only DR treatment centre in Ogun state. The tertiary and state hospitals are short-staffed in diabetic services. The physicians don¿t do dilated fundoscopy. The medical officers in the general hospitals are aware that DM affects the eyes. Only 49% of diabetic patients know that DM affects the eyes and 65% have never had ophthalmic examination. There are good facilities for treating DR, but few patients attend this service. This is the most comprehensive study on the situational analysis of diabetic retinopathy services that has been done in Nigeria to date. It has focused on the patient, physician, ophthalmologist and equipment aspects. This book is very useful for ophthalmologists, optometrists, ophthalmic nurses and other allied ophthalmic personnel.
