Conventional concrete used in building and civil engineering applications requires compaction to achieve strength, durability and homogeneity. The typical method of compaction by vibration, generates delay and additional cost in projects and moreover is a serious health hazard on and round construction sites. Though compaction techniques have advanced over the years, the process is still complicated in areas of the structure with congested reinforcement and complex forms. An efficient solution for achieving durable concrete structures independent of the quality of construction work is to employ self-compacting concrete (SCC). Self-compacting concrete is a highly flowable, stable concrete which flows readily into places even in the presence of congested reinforcement, filling formwork without any consolidation and without undergoing any significant segregation. The hardened concrete is dense, homogeneous and has the same engineering properties and durability as that of traditionalvibrated concrete. The use of SCC eliminates the need for compaction therefore saving time, reducing labour costs and conserving energy.
