The Malay and Chinese community has been living together in Pangkor Island for the past 70 years harmoniously but as Pangkor shifted from rural fishing village to tourism destination, the participation in tourism activities and development from these two groups have shown some differs. This study identified and compared the influential factors to tourism participation between the two community and came out with several recommendations to enhance and boost the local community participation level in tourism.

Mohamad Redzuan Abu Hassan is a lecturer at Department of Tourism & Hospitality Management, Politeknik Sultan Idris Shah, Malaysia. He has Bachelor of Hospitality Management-Tourism and MSc. in Tourism Planning from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. Redzuan¿s main research interests are in the fields of tourism sociology and community-based tourism.
