The Author: Carrie E. Reed received her Ph.D. in Chinese literature at the University of Washington in 1995. She teaches Chinese language and literature at Middlebury College in Vermont. She is the author of Chinese Chronicles of the Strange: The 'Nuogao ji' ; two articles about the practice of tattoo in ancient China; an article on the making and meaning of the Youyang zazu; and two Chinese language textbooks.
