Alcoholism and drug addiction is a major health
problem in America. Within the narrow confines of
current treatment modalities problems with addiction
continue to increase. This study illuminates
treatment successes, explores reasons an individual
becomes dependent, and clarifies that there are many
roads leading to recovery. The life stories of eight
women are chronicled as they enter addiction. The
intimate details of their lives are shared as they
journey through addiction into recovery. The
transformation of the way they view themselves,
their relationships and the world they live in comes
alive in the rich details of each of their stories.
This book can be used as a text for students
studying psychology, transformation, gender studies
or alcohol and drug studies. The stories contained
in this book can be used in a treatment setting to
help engage individuals in a process of change
leading to long term sustainable recovery.
Therapists, counselors or treatment programs can use
this book to better understand their clients and
improve treatment outcomes whether treatment is
based on a harm reduction model or is abstinence
based.
