Alison Uttley (1884-1976) developed a love of science at school and won a scholarship for physics at Manchester University. Her husband died in 1930, and in order to support herself and her son, she began to write a series of imaginary stories about animals such as Little Grey Rabbit, Little Red Fox, Sam Pig, and Hare. Before her death she wrote more than one hundred books. Phyllis Bray (1911-1991) was an English painter, illustrator, and muralist.
