The Nguyen of Kim Bai (a village in the Red River delta in Vietnam) traces its ancestry back to at least the 15th century. Nguyen Trieu Dan left North Vietnam in 1950 to study abroad. He was a diplomat for South Vietnam until 1975; since then he and his family have taken refuge in Victoria, Australia.
