Perlentaucher-Notiz zur NZZ-Rezension

Als "monumental" würdigt Rezensent Bernhard Lang die auf dreißig Bände angelegte "Encyclopedia of the Bible and its Reception", von der die ersten beiden von Hans-Josef Klauck, Bernard McGinn und anderen herausgegebenen Bände nun vorliegen. Besonders reizvoll findet er die Verbindung von Bibellexikon und Rezeptionsgeschichte, scheinen ihm biblische Rezeptionsgeschichten bislang doch eher Mangelware zu sein. In vorliegendem Werk kann man zu seiner Freude nun alles zum Beispiel über Adam und Eva finden, etwa was das antike Judentum über die beiden dachte, aber auch wie sie in Kunst, Literatur und Film verarbeitet wurden. Nicht immer allerdings findet Lang die Behandlung der Themen erschöpfend. Sogar Lücken muss er konstatieren. Er führt dies vor allem darauf zurück, dass es auf diesem Gebiet bisher kaum Vorarbeiten gibt, da die Theologie dazu tendiere, die Rezeptionsgeschichte der Bibel Fächern wie der Literaturwissenschaft und der Kunstgeschichte zu überlassen, diese aber meinten, die Theologie kümmere sich darum. Daher kommt Lang zu dem Schluss, dass die Autoren des vorliegenden Werks sich oft in einem "unerforschten Niemandsland" bewegen müssen. Die Bedeutung der Enzyklopädie sieht er insbesondere in der Verkleinerung dieses Niemandslands. "Ein wichtiges Werk also", resümiert der Rezensent, "dessen erste zwei Bände zwar das Versprechen des Titels nicht immer ganz einlösen, das sich aber bald als unentbehrlich herausstellen wird."
