Jamie and Joe DiCarlo have lived in Tampa for the past fifteen years, and have been married for six years. Jamie is a teacher of young students with autism spectrum disorders, and Joe works in an office setting, but his true passion is art. Living in Tampa they have learned that pirates are more than just a tradition, but a way of life. Every January through February they celebrate Gasparilla Pirate Festival in Tampa, Florida. Their son Owen has embraced the pirate in him and immersed himself in the tradition, embodying the spirit of a pirate. Each year Jamie and Joe write a story for Owen for his birthday. For his third birthday he was enthralled with the pirate traditions of Tampa, and that is how The ABC's of Being a Pirate came about.
