Abhraka bhasma has its therapeutic indication in many of the diseases like Yakshma, Prameha, Pandu, Raktapitta, Shwasa, Kasa, Grahani etc. which are now established free radical mediated diseases. Changes in the environmental factors, life style, eating habits, stressful conditions etc have caused various adverse effects on the human beings leading to increased production of free radicals. These cytotoxic free radicals play an important role in the immune-system dysfunction due to which the mankind is prone to various major ailments which are free radical mediated ones. To prevent these diseases, the immunity of the person should be strong. Many herbals drugs and compound herbal preparations have been screened for their Immuno modulatory effect, but still there is a need for effective immune enhancers. It is a fact that Abhraka bhasma is being used in treating many of the immune related diseases since from ancient period, prompted us to take the present study which aims to validate the Immuno modulatory effect of Abhraka bhasma scientifically and explain its probable mode of action in such diseases at the cellular level.
