This book is a practical guide on the determination of the academic reading needs of teacher trainees of English at ISCED-Huíla, a higher teacher training institution in Lubango, Angola. The book is divided into five parts. Firstly, it describes the focus of this research study and the reasons for it and embedded it within the broader Angolan education context. Secondly, it reviews different scientific studies conducted in the areas of needs analysis in English for Academic Purposes (EAP), the reading process in second language and in EAP, and those on designing academic literacy programs. Thirdly, it discusses methodological issues of the study. Fourthly, it describes and discusses the findings of the main study. Finally, it presents its conclusions and recommendations. It is hoped that the results of the study will be of assistance to EAP reading professionals and to teacher educators, especially those in developing countries, involved in selecting, adapting and designing teacher training programmes, materials and tasks to improve academic literacy levels in their institutions where English is taught as a foreign language.
