This is an essay and a process allowing individuals to access the power and freedom of true forgiveness. Father O'Rourke's short essay and practices allow us the freedom to let go of the misconception that forgiveness condones the hurts that have been done to us. The essay directs us to a process for healing the emotions and feelings that follow forgiveness. The contribution to those who forgive is powerful and palpable, untying us from the past and opening life up to new possibilities. Forgiveness lifts us out of resignation, resentment, and regret.

Autorenporträt
Born in the town of Roscommon, Ireland in 1925, Gerry was christened as Patrick Gerard O'Rourke. The oldest of eight children, Gerry was ordained to the priesthood in 1950. Apart from five years in a rural Irish parish, Gerry spent his priesthood working outside Ireland--in Wisconsin, Los Angeles, Brazil, and finally in the San Francisco Bay Area. In 1973, Gerry stepped aside from the active priesthood, feeling burned out. After participating in the EST Training that same year and subsequently volunteering and working in the ESY organization, he took up his priesthood again in 1979 with new energy and commitment. For more than ten years, he served as the director of Ecumenical and Interfaith Affairs for the Archdiocese of San Francisco. He also was instrumental in the creation and establishment of the San Francisco Interfaith Council, the Interfaith Center of the Presidio in San Francisco, and the United Religions Initiative. In the early 1980s, Gerry was one of the founders of the Mastery Foundation with the purpose of empowering leaders of faith communities working in ministry and service to others and grassroots leaders working to reconcile and heal communities where religious identity is part of a conflict or division. In 1984, Werner Erhard designed and led Making a Difference: A Course for Those Who Minister. Gerry faithfully served on the board of trustees from the beginning and as our chair from 2005 until his death. Born in New York City in 1945, the 2nd oldest in a family of 13 children, Michael Delia has had numerous careers as an aviation entrepreneur, artist, program leader, carpenter, and musician. An accomplished photographer, painter, and printmaker, he holds a BFA from the Cooper Union in New York City. This book marks his first venture into writing and publishing and results directly from his work with The Mastery Foundation's grass roots work in Northern Ireland where he was a member of the School for Leadership Faculty. He served in that capacity supporting and co-writing school curricula and delivering programs. He also worked closely with Werner Erhard developing his Mission Control Program. Michael has been married to Maggie Delia, the love of his life and his partner in all things, for 45 years and is the father of four extraordinary adult children, Danielle, Jesse, Jaime, and Olivia and two beautiful grandsons, Thomas, and Daniel. He and Maggie had the privilege of working with Father Gerry for over twenty years. Somewhere in the middle of that time, he promised to get Gerry's work published, little knowing how involved that would be and how involved he and Maggie and others around them would be. During that time, they interviewed him, recorded him, and filmed him and occasionally co-led programs with him. This book, based on Father Gerry's work came out of his relationship with Father Gerry and the many people who engaged with Gerry over the years.
