Admiration & Challenge explores the character of Karl Barth's theological relationship with John Calvin by analyzing Barth's use of Calvin's arguments in his theological construction, which is simultaneously "anti-modernist" and "modern." The first part of this book is devoted to a theological and historical analysis of Barth's engagement with Calvin, while the second part includes a thematic analysis of Barth's use of Calvin in two major doctrines - the doctrine of the knowledge of God and the theme of law and gospel.

Rezensionen
"Barth's theology can scarcely be understood without delving into its deep and abiding - but by no means uncritical - relationship to Calvin. By making use of posthumous material from Barth as well as of recent scholarly studies, 'Admiration & Challenge' gives a clear and accessible account of some of the central topics in the conversation of Barth with his forebear and will stimulate scholars and students alike to a fresh reflection on the character of Barth's work as a Reformed theologian." (John Webster, Lady Margaret Professor of Divinity, University of Oxford)
"Barth's relationship with Calvin has long called for a careful and detailed study. In this important and timely book, Sung Wook Chung has provided the most detailed study of this relationship to date. 'Admiration & Challenge' will be a major resource for all interested in Barth's relationship to the Reformation as well as the ongoing debate over the style of Barth's theology." (Alister McGrath, Professor of Historical Theology, Oxford University)
