Though fish farming started in Cameroon in the late
40s, currently the country meets only half domestic
demand for fish. This study examines its adoption
and diffussion in Cameroon and attempts an answer as
to why there is a lag in its diffusion process. The
study focuses on the inhibiting and driving forces
and role of past promotion agents. The theoretical
background used is the Model of Behaviour
Modification. Alongside Variables of adoption
(Rogers 2003), this forms the conceptual frame-work
upon which the work is based. Data was collected
through semi structured qualitative interviews, key
informant and focus group discussion in
Cameroon (2006) as well as a concise review of
literature from secondary sources. Broadly
classified under economic, social, policy,
environment, technical etc however, the inhibiting
forces were found to be more glaring than the
driving forces. The activity is revealed to
beproject driven. Nevertheless, if the target group
by donors is reconsidered, the weak ex-tension system
strengthened, more research on fingerlings
production, etc. the activity might possibly
shift to the phase of self-propelling
in Cameroon.
