This book is based on an empirical study to investigate the status of benchmarking in Indian automobile industry First, the book illustrates the basic concept of benchmarking and the role of benchmarking in continuous improvements. Further, the extent at which benchmarking has been adopted in developed countries, especially in automobile sector is discussed. Afterwards, the book examines and compares the benchmarking methods and philosophies of Indian automobile industries in order to identify the best practices being adopted by automobile industries in India through a comprehensive survey followed by case studies. Five automobile industries were chosen for case studies to get deeper insight of issues pertaining to adaptation of best practices and subsequently implementation of benchmarking activities. Investigation of the differences and similarities in large automobile industries and SMEs, regarding benchmarking issues, is also carried out in the research.This study reveals that the Indian automobile manufacturing industry is in-progress for the implementation of benchmarking concepts.

Dr. Avinash Panwar is Director at Centre for Electronic Governance in Government of Rajasthan, India. He completed his Ph.D. from MNIT, Jaipur (India) under the supervision of Prof. A P S Rathore, MNIT Jaipur and Prof. Rakesh Jain, MNIT Jaipur.
