Wewer christened Antonius Wewer was born in Harsewinkel, Germany and entered the Franciscan order in Warendorf in 1858. In 1862 he was sent to Teutopolis, Illinois to assist with projects in the German-Catholic communities in Missouri and Illinois. He was to be based at St. Anthony of Padua in St. Louis, Missouri, a church that he designed.
