From the preface: This book has evolved from intensive research on various aspects of studies related to Kanuri. It also reflects current topics of research on the Lake Chad area, especially Borno, in the field of the humanities. The contributions to this volume by scholars working on these topics reflect the breadth of present-day Kanuri scholarship, even though only a small spectrum of themes could be dealt with here. The contributors are members of the universities of Maiduguri, Frankfurt, Mainz, Cologne, Vienna, and the Sir Kashim Ibrahim College of Education, Maiduguri. The articles, which concentrate on aspects of Kanuri linguistics, literature, anthropology, and music, are introduced by the late Wilhelm Seidensticker in an article which supplies an overview of the ethnic situation in Borno in the 19th century, a period when the outside interest in the area grew considerably. Norbert Cyffer presents a sketch of Kanuri grammar and assesses the genetic relationship between Kanuri and other languages of the Sahel and central Sahara: he also deliberates on the comparatively long history of Kanuri language studies. Shettima Umara Bulakarima, who has specialized in Kanuri dialectology, reviews the dialect aspect of the language. Doris Löhr takes a look at the long history and complexity of the writing of Kanuri from the mid 19th century to the present day. The literature section is introduced by two survey articles: Bosoma Sheriff presents a typology of Kanuri poetry, and Tijani El-Miskin proposes a classification of Kanuri literary genres. Thomas Geider provides an assessment of Kanuri oral literature today. Yaganami Karta chose as a specific topic one of the legendary exponents of Kanuri oral literature, Kime Jirea. Wakil Wasaram describes a particular Kanuri tradition and its related terminology. A second article in this volume by Bosoma Sheriff concerns aspects of the joking relationship between the Kanuri and the Fulani people. The causes for these close connections are explored in the article by Eldridge Mohammadou, who points out the great amount of lexical borrowing from Kanuri by the Fulani of Adamawa, a likely consequence of closer contacts between the two peoples in the past. Raimund Vogels concludes the series with an article on the theme of Kanuri ethno-musicology. Editha Platte closes the publication with an obituary to Wilhelm Seidensticker, who died in Maiduguri in October 1996.
