James Fenimore Cooper was an American author who lived from September 15, 1789, to September 14, 1851. He was famous for writing historical romances with people from the 17th century to the 19th century who were either colonial or native. He spent most of his childhood and last fifteen years of his life in Cooperstown, New York. His father, William Cooper, built the town on land that he owned. Cooper gave a lot of money to the Episcopal Church and became a member not long before he died. He was a member of the Linonian Society while he was at Yale University for three years. After working on a commercial voyage for a while, Cooper became a midshipman in the U.S. Navy and learned how to run sailing ships, which had a big impact on many of his books and other works. The Spy, a spy story set during the American Revolutionary War and released in 1821, was the book that made him famous. He also wrote American stories about the sea. Five historical tales set on the frontier between 1823 and 1841 are his most famous works. They are called the Leatherstocking Tales, and they introduced the famous American frontier scout Natty Bumppo.
