Masters athletes are defined as individuals older than 35 years of age who are training for, and competing in, events designed for older athletes. The rising popularity and success of this cohort has begun to stimulate interest within the field of sports science in an attempt to understand the underlying factors that affect their performance. However, our knowledge of this population is limited with regards to optimal training, nutritional and recovery strategies. It¿s clear that guidelines established for younger athletes may not necessarily apply to masters athletes due to various age-related changes in both their morphology and physiology. It appears that age-related decrements in sprint performance are often mediated by a reduction in the intensity and volume of training or age-related decrease in muscle mass that commonly occurs in master¿s athletes. The purpose of this book is to examine the effect of concurrent resistance and sprint cycling training on both sprint cycling performance and the common age-related declines in morphology and physiology that affect sprint cycling performance in aging athletes.
