Gunabhagya est titulaire d'un doctorat en économie agricole de l'Université des sciences agricoles de Raichur. Il a mené des recherches pendant sa maîtrise et son doctorat sur divers sujets liés à l'agriculture. Il travaille actuellement en tant qu'associé de recherche au Centre de développement agricole et de transformation rurale (ADRTC), Institut pour le changement social et économique.
