She retired from teaching and pursued her career in performing arts. After her husband died, she then decided to take lessons in Aikido. She earned her first black belt at the age of seventy-five.

Dr. Barbara M. Butler is an RN and holds a master's and doctorate degree in science education. She has taught science in k-12 education settings as well as anatomy and physiology at the community college, undergraduate, and graduate levels at several universities. Dr. Butler is currently on faculty at North Carolina A&T State University in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction.
