In the early 1960s, a group of activists organized clandestinely to provide emotional support, advice, and perform abortions safely, affordably, and without distinctions of ethnicity or social class. By day they were students, housewives and exemplary wives, but, abandoning their masks, they went out protected by the darkness of the night to wallpaper the city with a coded proclamation: Are you pregnant? Need help? Call Jane. In On the Other Side of the Line, Kerri Maher fictionalizes the feat of Chicago's Jane Collective based on the stories of three women who at some point had to call or answer a decisive call in their lives. Thanks to his cinematographic style, Maher manages to draw in an agile and entertaining way the spirit and edges of a time in which the personal was inevitably political, expressing the concerns that feminist causes were going through at that time in the most stimulating way possible: remembering those who preceded us, evoking their voices in the reading as in a midnight call, determined to wake us up.
