Raised Alanine aminotransferase in acute pancreatitis is stongly suggestive of biliary pancreatitis. It strongly differentiates biliary from non biliary causes of acute pancreatitis hence precluding severe consequences if timely intervened. This study confirmed that Alanine aminotransferase is a useful marker for predicting gallstones in acute pancreatitis, and that there is a positive correlation between increasing Alanine aminotransferase, and likelihood of Biliary acute pancreatitis.
