Albania is a small, mountainous country in the Balkan Peninsula, very reach in fresh water sources. Hydrographically the country is divided into seven watershed basins, formed by major river systems flowing in a westerly or north-westerly direction across the country, from north to south, the Mati River, Mati River, Ishem and Erzeni Rivers, Shkumbini River, Semani River, and the Vjosa River. These river systems drain not only the land mass of Albania, but also large parts of inhabited areas in Kosovo, North Macedonia, and Montenegro. There is a need to:- increase in the activities on general water monitoring and establish ecological monitoring as needed to comply with WFD;- formal identification and characterization of water bodies (including determination of the ecological status of surface waters);- increase the sewerage service coverage, particularly in the more urbanized and densely populated areas where sewage in the natural environment presents the potential for public health problems; - increase the percent of sewage going to a proper sewage treatment plant.
