Albemarle is the county seat of Stanly County, located amidst the rolling hills of the North Carolina piedmont. The influential Hearne family donated 51 acres to the first Commissioners of Stanly County and Albemarle was incorporated in 1857. Author Elizabeth Varner graduated from Salem Academy and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she received a Phillips Travel Grant to study how the architecture of the European Baroque Palaces related to the contemporary political climate. After graduating with a degree in Art History, Ms. Varner became Director of the Stanly County Historic Preservation Commission and Museum.
